How does Kafka's The Metamorphosis show existentialist thinking through Gregor Samsa, his sister and his family?

Quote 1:

"I had the urge to eat that rotten pizza so I jumped off the ceiling" (Kafka 17).

Context:   Gregor is a bug and has been upset.  He started to crawl up the wall and felt good about it. When he was hungry, he smelled the food and leaped off the wall.

Existentialism:  Gregor's decision to leap off the wall to get his food has nothing to do with society or any one else. It is simply his own decision to follow his needs and wants.  This shows existentialism since Gregor is determining that he wants to be bug-like.

Section One: Why did Gregor Samsa transform into a vermin and not a dog?

Cunningham

Quote:             "Oh God.  What a strenuous career I have chosen" (Kafka 2)

Explanation:    This means that Gregor Samsa was thinking about his career as a he awoke as a bug.                             He was thinking about how hard and taxing his job as a salesman is.

Connect:           Samsa's thoughts on how tough his job was might have made him want to become a                             vermin because he would not have to work.  As a dog, he would still have to see
people, but as a vermin, he would be able to hide.  He may hate his job so much
because of the people.  As a bug, he would not have to be around people.
